Hatha Yoga
A contemporary application

Yoga practice gives us ‘tools’ to live fully with the understanding of who we are and what our higher purpose is in life.

As we become physically strong through the practice of Yoga postures we also become mentally strong with an increased ability to maintain focus and concentration.

We strengthen on an emotional level and are more equipped to deal with life’s highs and lows, where problems that once seemed overwhelming become much more manageable.

Through turning inward and connecting with ourselves, we develop a relationship with our "true self." From practices of finding stillness within, we find a higher purpose.

As we strengthen on all levels we are more equipped to live the life we choose. As we become more flexible physically we too become more flexible mentally and less fixed and hard-headed. Emotionally we become more open, less protected, and more forgiving and loving of ourselves and others.

The practice of Yoga is a journey into
the self and will deepen and enrich
your life on all levels

The class practice follows a specific format:

Pranayama (breath awareness)

Limbering to activate every joint and muscle in the body

Asana (postures)
Meditation
Savasana (relaxation)

The practice of yoga allows us to live our lives consciously.

"Yoga has been for me an emotional and spiritual journey, as well as the obvious physical one. I love the feeling of calmness after a session - being able to breath more deeply and knowing that there have been internal shifts towards wellbeing. Thank you Shannon." -Gill, Kelmscott

Benefits & Qualities of a Continuing Yoga Practice:

If we are to start something new in our lives then it must have relevance to us. It must offer us something that we need. Yoga is no exception to this.

Most commonly the reason people are interested to take the first step to join a Yoga class is to meet a physical need or imbalance, for example, flexibility, stress reduction, weight loss, mind body connection.

I regularly suggest to students that Yoga is a Journey, it is not a quick fix or an instant solution to ones physical or emotional hurdles ,most importantly attending a weekly class offers great ongoing benefits and gently but surely the deeper collective  qualities of yoga will arise. Being able to manage stressful situations in your external environment and a genuine balancing of your emotional fitness will become a sound and ongoing experience. Your mind and body will have a sense of connection and you generally adapt with feelings of wellbeing on a daily basis.

Flexibility, stress reduction and improved general health are certainly all the results of a regular practice. Weight loss can come in time with food management and the more physical styles of Yoga. But the spiritual awareness in oneself, whilst undertaking a regular Yoga practice is inevitable; each yoga class contains the seed for transformation and begins the process of integration and harmonization.

YOGA – means to Yoke, bring the mind and body together to align us with the higher spiritual source, whoever that source may be for you. Yoga doesn’t preach or align its practices with any one religion, therefore it is an open practice for all, Yoga is for everyone!

Like many other styles of yoga, I teach Asana, Pranayama, Sense withdrawal and Meditation. Each of these practices is having effects on multiple levels. The physical postures- the Asanas are the starting point where the body is toned, massaged, stretched and loosened, we are placing the physical body in positions that cultivate awareness, relaxation, concentration and focus.

Pranayama – Breath awareness, to breath is to live, without breath there is no life. Pranayama is taught initially to create awareness of one’s breath and then to energize and heal the body with oxygen. Different practices can expand, vitalize, balance, heal and clam our energy. Prana is the vital energy, the life force in everything.  The effect of the oxygen on the mind is nourishing and stilling, leaving us in clarity which helps internal focus and awareness in the practice of meditation.

In sense withdrawal you are guided to retract your senses from the outside world, sight, sound, touch- taking your attention inside your spirit body. This strengthens your focus and awareness intern reducing the chatter of the mind, deflecting any thoughts to be addressed at a later time, resulting in a clearer stress less experience.

In our meditation practices you can develop the insight into your inner world and ultimately to finding peace and contentment.

Indeed I find our Yoga classes work to relax the body and mind and to increase awareness and wellbeing on all levels.

"It is important to understand that we are profoundly emotional beings and inherently spiritual. Once we validate this, we can begin to untangle the effect our thoughts and feelings have on our behavior.

Yoga is an effective way to develop this awareness, starting with the body and the breath; but ultimately developing stillness in the mind, inner peace and lasting happiness!"
